Hi! I'm Lisa French!

I am Professor and Dean of the School of Media and Communication at RMIT University, Melbourne.

I have written extensively on Australian cinema, particularly in relation to gender.

I co-authored the book Shining a Light: 50 Years of the Australian Film Institute (2009 & 2014) with Mark Poole, and was the co-writer/editor of Womenvision: Women and the Moving Image in Australia (2003).

I was recently invited to join the Screen Australia 'Gender Matters' taskforce and was the Chair of the ‘Screen Futures’ International conference (2016).

I am currently completing a book: The Female Gaze in Documentary Film – An International Perspective, Palgrave Macmillan.

I am Co-Chair of the UNESCO University Network on Gender, Media and ICTs. Its website is here: www.unitwin.net

My professional service includes three years as the director of the prestigious St Kilda Film Festival and nine years on the board of the Australian Film Institute.

My film projects include producing the film Birth of a Film Festival, (2003), a documentary about the first Melbourne International Film Festival.
